France Shapefiles – Free Download for GIS Mapping & Research

France shapefiles are now available for free download to support GIS mapping, academic research, and professional projects. Whether you’re analysing population distribution, transportation networks, or creating custom maps of France’s diverse geography, these shapefiles provide the essential datasets—cleaned, clipped, and ready to use in QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Pro, and Mapbox.
What’s Included in the France Shapefile Package?
The France shapefile package has been carefully prepared to support spatial analysis and mapping workflows. Each dataset is delivered in the standard .shp format and compressed into ZIP folders for easy download.
Included datasets:
- Administrative Boundaries (ADM0 & ADM1): The national boundary of France (ADM0) and detailed regional divisions such as metropolitan regions and overseas territories (ADM1). Data sourced from GADM and OpenStreetMap.
- Road Network: Vector layers showing France’s transportation infrastructure, including highways, secondary roads, and local networks. Sourced from OpenStreetMap for detail and accuracy.
- Water Bodies: Rivers, lakes, and coastal outlines, sourced from Natural Earth, useful for hydrology studies, land-use planning, and environmental research.
👉 For departments and municipal-level boundaries (ADM2/ADM3), download directly from GADM France.
Coordinate Reference System (CRS) Information
All France shapefiles are provided in WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) — the global coordinate system used by GPS, Google Maps, and most GIS platforms.
- Compatible with QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Pro, Mapbox, and others.
- No reprojection needed for general analysis.
- For UTM zones or national grid projections, files can easily be reprojected in GIS software.
