India Shapefiles – Download Free GIS Data for Administrative, Roads, and Water Layers

India shapefiles are now available for free download to support your GIS mapping, research, or academic projects. Whether you’re studying population distribution, analysing infrastructure, or creating custom maps of India’s diverse regions, these shapefiles provide the core layers you need—cleaned, clipped, and ready to use in QGIS, ArcGIS, and other GIS software.

What’s Included in the India Shapefile Package?

The India shapefile package has been carefully curated and preprocessed to support your GIS analysis and map creation workflows. Each dataset is delivered in a widely supported .shp (shapefile) format and compressed into ZIP folders for convenient download and use.

Included in this package are key geospatial layers essential for studying and visualising India’s geography:

  • Administrative Boundaries (ADM0 & ADM1): This includes the national boundary of India (ADM0) and detailed internal divisions such as states and union territories (ADM1). These are sourced from trusted datasets like GADM and OpenStreetMap.

  • Road Network: Contains vector layers representing India’s transportation infrastructure, including national highways, state highways, and other major roadways. Data is derived from OpenStreetMap for reliability and detail.

  • Water Bodies: Features India’s major rivers, lakes, and coastal outlines sourced from Natural Earth. These layers are especially useful for environmental analysis, hydrology, and land use planning.

Coordinate Reference System (CRS) Information

All shapefiles in this India GIS data package are provided in the WGS 84 coordinate system, using the standard EPSG:4326 code. WGS 84 (World Geodetic System 1984) is a global reference system for latitude and longitude, and it’s the default CRS used by GPS devices, Google Maps, and most web mapping tools.

The EPSG:4326 format stores coordinates in degrees (decimal), which makes it widely compatible with nearly all GIS software platforms, including QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Pro, and Mapbox. By using this standard, you won’t need to reproject or transform the files for basic mapping and analysis.

This universal compatibility ensures that the shapefiles can be imported, visualised, and analysed quickly without CRS errors or alignment issues. If you require another projection (e.g., UTM or national grid), you can easily reproject the files in QGIS or ArcGIS to suit your workflow or regional requirements.

Population Spatial Data for India

If you need detailed population data to complement the India shapefiles, we recommend downloading gridded population rasters from WorldPop India. These datasets provide high-resolution estimates of population distribution across India, broken down by small grid cells. They are ideal for spatial analysis, demographic mapping, urban planning, and health research. The data is available in GeoTIFF format and is compatible with GIS software like QGIS and ArcGIS. You can integrate it seamlessly with your shapefile layers to visualise population density, growth trends, and more. Access the free dataset here:
